A new forest for greater climate resilience in Saxony
In autumn 2025, together with the Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald (SDW), we continued afforesting a 2-hectare area in Oberlungwitz (Bernsdorf municipality) near Zwickau. This region is particularly affected by climate change – exactly where new forests are urgently needed. This afforestation not only creates habitats for wildlife and plants but also makes a long-term contribution to climate, soil, and flood protection.
November 22, 2025, was a bright and sunny winter day. Despite a light dusting of snow, the soil was loose and easy to work – ideal conditions for our afforestation activity. Earlier in the spring, elms, cherries, oaks, and other site-appropriate species had already been planted on the 2-hectare mixed forest area. Now, in late autumn 2025, 500 young alders were added. Together with the SDW and with the support of dedicated local volunteers, the young trees were planted in no time.
The area lies directly along a near-natural floodplain, framed by steep slopes and valuable existing trees. Due to its location, it is difficult to protect the site with wildlife fences. The alders were therefore chosen because they are naturally resistant to browsing and do not require additional protection. In addition, they actively contribute to the renaturation of the watercourse: their leaves act as a natural filter, stabilize water quality, and create new habitats.
The SDW oversees the care of the entire area until the forest reaches cultural maturity – this includes regular inspections, pruning, and, if necessary, replanting individual trees. Step by step, a diverse, climate-resilient mixed forest is taking shape, strengthening climate, soil, and flood protection while enhancing the region over the long term.
Our objectives for this site
- Improve climate, soil, and flood protection, as well as landscape water management
- Increase biodiversity
- Enhance the quality of life for local communities
- Improve the scenic and landscape value
