Common misconceptions about the EU Emission Trading System
The European Union’s Emission Trading System (EU-ETS) is the EU’s main instrument for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Still, few people know about it.
Upon first learning about the EU-ETS, people may falsely believe it’s related to CO2 offset certificates. For that reason, we make a point of avoiding the word ‘certificates’ in that context. Instead, we only speak of ‘emission rights’ or ‘emission allowances’.
After clarifying the difference between the compliance market for emission rights and the voluntary market for offsets, people may, again wrongly, believe the EU-ETS purpose is like a tax and that the main effect of canceling emission rights is that the price of pollution goes up. However, the power and purpose of the EU-ETS are in that it’s a cap and trade system. That means that for each emission right canceled, the amount of CO2 emitted by the affected industries is permanently lowered by one tonne.
Offset your CO2 footprint reliably in Europe
No matter how hard we try, it is currently impossible to limit our personal carbon footprint in Germany to the necessary minimum of less than two tons per year.
Working in journalism and the media requires business trips, energy-intensive video calls and the transfer of large amounts of data. This cannot be completely prevented, but at least it can be effectively offset. ForTomorrow offers you the most reliable way to do so by purchasing EU emission certificates and planting forests in Germany. Find out more and offset now:
