From farmland to biodiverse mixed forest
With the afforestation in Niederrossau, a new climate-resilient mixed forest is taking root on land that was formerly used for agriculture. The site borders an existing stream-side forest – ideal conditions for connecting habitats and boosting biodiversity.
On 1.5 hectares, a near-natural deciduous mixed forest is growing, not only storing CO2 but also protecting soil, retaining water within the landscape, and making a valuable contribution to local biodiversity.
Before the first trees could be planted, the site was carefully prepared for afforestation. The land, formerly used for agriculture, was properly conditioned, and a wildlife fence was installed to protect the young plants from browsing.
During a joint planting event with the ForTomorrow team and almost 20 volunteers, new trees were planted – a committed start for a vibrant, biodiverse forest of tomorrow.
An important goal of the project is the sustainable development of the area. SDW Saxony is helping the young mixed forest to establish itself sustainably during its crucial first years of development. This will allow a healthy and stable mixed deciduous forest to develop there over the long term. Project funding thus enables the necessary protection and maintenance measures to be carried out on the site until the forest is sufficiently established, so that a healthy and stable forest can develop there over the long term.
Our objectives for this site
- Climate, soil, and groundwater protection by converting intensively used grassland into climate-resilient forest
- Forest expansion through the extension of existing woodland areas
- Habitat connectivity thanks to the proximity to existing stream-side forests
- Increased recreational value and promotion of regional biodiversity
- New habitats for native plants and animals in a structurally diverse environment

On the day of the afforestation, an SDW employee shows the hardworking volunteers how to properly plant the trees in the ground.
