New forest, new strength – for nature, climate, and water
Together with the Saxony branch of the Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald (SDW), we were able to bring new forest to life in Lauter in spring 2025. This site is part of a larger afforerstation effort, through which a total of 5.85 hectares of new woodland have been created across five regions in Saxony.
Here in particular, within a flood-prone area, the young forest plays an important role: by planting climate-resilient tree species, a diverse mixed forest is taking shape – one that not only provides habitat for many species, but also enriches the landscape and helps protect the region.
To ensure that the young trees can grow undisturbed, a wildlife fence protects the area from browsing by deer and other wildlife. The reforestation and long-term project support are funded by the SDW as part of its charitable work. The goal is to safeguard the area through silvicultural measures during the critical early growth phase. This gives the young forest the time it needs to grow strong and resilient.
Our objectives for this site
- Strengthening climate protection, soil conservation, and flood prevention
- Expanding forest cover in a flood-prone area
- Enhancing quality of life for local communities and boosting the region’s appeal
- Enriching and revitalizing the landscape

First glimpses of the new forest, a few weeks after planting: The young trees have thrived in their first weeks and are beginning to green the area.
